Does the smell of fresh ambition get you out of bed in the morning instead of a skinny vanilla latte? If so, you know there’s a force inside of you that pulls you to create, build and lead your own business.
When you want something, you’re going to get it.
As the “basic” counterpart, you don’t care about living up to anyone’s expectations. You challenge the status quo because you know you’re destined for greatness. You’re part babe, part superhero and part Sophia Amoruso, Nasty Gal’s founder and owner and Girl Boss ringleader.
As a part of this badass breed of women who have ambition running through our veins, it’s clear being a Girl Boss is a mentality, not a status. We’re those 20-something girls with a vision, already killing it in our lives and businesses. Our success doesn’t come from our background; it’s a direct result of the effort we invest.
This isn’t bragging; it’s an invitation.
If you take anything away from this article, it should be this: In today’s world, you have the opportunity to take your skills and passion and use them to create a business, make a living and design your own future.
So, you’re in? Here’s how to know if you have what it takes to join the tribe:
1. You live life on your own terms.
You don’t spend time worrying about other people’s expectations of you because honestly, you have way more important sh*t to do (like taking over the world).
Regardless of what your parents or your friends might think, you do your own damn thing. And, as much as you love them, you don’t expect anyone else to understand your logic (or lack thereof).
To you, rules were meant to be broken, and the next best thing since dry shampoo is still out there waiting to be created, invented or discovered.
2. You believe being young is one of your greatest strengths.
We hate to say screw all the haters, but screw all the haters. You’re that girl with the crazy dream who can’t wait until you’re rich, old and wrinkly.
We all need to start sometime, right? And for you, that sometime was yesterday.
Some may call it immaturity or naiveté, but you call it youthful ambition with a hint of badass (your secret recipe for success).
3. You’re a go-getter, a dreamer and a doer.
You believe the best way to predict the future is to create it, so you don’t just talk about your dreams; you make them your reality.
You thrive while doing a million things at once because you don’t do anything you don’t want to do.
You’re probably working a full-time job and rocking a side hustle because you’ll sleep when you’re dead, obviously.
4. You are your own biggest critic.
Unlike most people, you don’t view criticism as negativity. You’re always striving to be a better version of yourself, refusing to settle for mediocrity because you’d be straight up bored out of your mind.
You’re critical of yourself because you know you’re fiercely smart, incredibly talented and capable of even more.
Why shouldn’t you be brutally honest with yourself?
You refuse to settle, and you single-handedly push yourself to the top.
5. You value the freedom to create your own lifestyle by being your own boss.
You don’t believe in wasting your life away to build someone else’s dreams. You want to build something of your own that gives you the flexibility to create a lifestyle where work doesn’t feel like work.
Whether that flexibility allows you to travel or take four-hour lunch breaks, you’re busting your ass to produce amazing work.
At the end of the day, you’re incredibly proud of what you’ve accomplished.
6. You don’t let roadblocks get you sidetracked.
Your passion drives you and crushes anything that stands in your way. You see roadblocks as challenges and well, you like challenges.
Of course, you have those moments when you want to rip your hair out and cry into your pillow (ugh, mascara stains).
But, you quickly pull yourself together and figure out how to get around it, over it, under it or through it.
And then, you’re on to the next one.
7. You accept that failure is a part of the process.
You know sometimes you win and sometimes you learn. But, you’ve got some serious dreams, and you won’t let a couple of hurdles get you down.
We all know failure is inevitably a part of success, but you know that just because one idea fails, it doesn’t mean you’re a failure.
You embrace it and go back to the drawing board to make some art.
8. You make it happen.
You don’t just throw fate to the wind. You’re all about getting in and getting your hands dirty; you don’t need anyone’s permission to get started.
Your energy comes from doing a million different things at once.
Sometimes, you don’t even know how you juggle it all and still have time for that Pilates class.
You’re the girl who’s never bored because you know there’s always something you can be doing or learning to get you one step closer to the top.
Keep killing it, Girl Boss.
